Stripe (payments and donations)

Stripe Connect for online payments and donations, set up at Settings > Payments.

3 min read · Updated Aug 13, 2026

Tormano uses Stripe Connect so funds go directly to your own bank account, not Tormano's. We never hold your money.

Your organization is the merchant of record, which means your own Stripe account pays Stripe's processing fee (standard US rate 2.9% + 30 cents per card charge) and Tormano takes its platform fee on top.

Tormano's platform fee depends on your edition, because the two editions charge very different amounts:

  • Nonprofit edition - 2.00% per transaction. All-in on a card donation that is about 4.9% + 30 cents. See Accepting donations with Stripe for a worked example.
  • Business edition - 0.25% per transaction. All-in on a card payment that is about 3.15% + 30 cents.

Stripe's own fees are set by Stripe under your agreement with Stripe, are deducted by Stripe from the transaction, and are neither charged by nor payable to Tormano. Payments and gifts you record manually in Tormano carry no platform fee. The Settings > Payments page shows the exact platform-fee percent applied to your account once Stripe is connected.

What Stripe powers

  • Online donations (one-time and recurring, on the Nonprofit edition).
  • Event registration payments.
  • B2B invoice and quote payments - payment links and online checkout are generated automatically on your invoices and quotes (in Documents > Quotes & Invoicing) once Stripe is connected.

Setup

Stripe is set up on its own top-level settings page: Settings > Payments. (It's a top-level page, not nested under Integrations.) Click Connect Stripe Account to create a new Stripe account or link an existing one, then complete Stripe's verification (identity, bank account). Once connected, the page shows your Stripe account ID and setup status.

Disputes and refunds

Disputes and refunds are handled from the Stripe dashboard, not from Tormano. Once a refund is issued, the event syncs back to Tormano via webhook and the donation/payment record updates to a refunded status.

Who bears the cost. Your organization is the merchant of record, so a dispute is against your organization, not against Tormano. Stripe debits your own Stripe account for the disputed amount and for Stripe's dispute fee, and you respond to the dispute in Stripe before its evidence deadline. Tormano notifies your administrators when a dispute is opened and when it is resolved, but Tormano is not a party to it and does not cover the disputed amount or the dispute fee. On a refund, Stripe debits the refunded amount from your Stripe balance and does not return the processing fee it charged on the original transaction; Tormano does return its own platform fee in proportion to the amount you refund.
